Finding the Frames
The image is merely the souvenir, a bit of art that reflects what was a flash of inspiration in the midst of a journey. Nothing is quite as exciting as coming upon a moment or location that offers an image worth freezing in time. While what develops may or may not live up to the initial goal, getting out there and being in a position to point the camera at something interesting or beautiful has always been where the joy lies.
Years ago, while working in Africa, I jumped out of the SUV as a caravan of camels passed by and the rush felt while filming the moment has never quite gone away. I was a wide-eyed 22 year old and doubt that any of my footage was used but I still think back to that day on the side of the road. For my career, I have leaned into storytelling through video but it is in the still images, with no agenda or outline to follow, where my heart lies. Some of my favorite shots come from what initially felt like a failed trip out and they offer reminders to never pass up the shot...even if you'll see that same spot on the way back.
It is my hope that you will find a bit of the wonder that our world has to offer in these photos.
